Removal of Topic pages[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

13 III 16

I noticed that you propose the removal of a lot of topic pages. Is this something you are doing in collaboration with somebody?--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 23:34, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Notification Dave Braunschweig : I just noticed that you are involved with the deletion of these topics. I have full confidence in your judgement, so it's OK for you to delete. My question is whether there is a proposed criteria for deletion that I should look at? (I have been kind of busy the last couple of months and haven't been that active on Wikiversity custodial issues)--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 23:43, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

There's no defined criteria, but after looking at a few pages, it's relatively easy to see whether there are any "educational objectives or discussion in history" that may be salvaged and merged with other pages, or if there's nothing but an empty template and links to courses already identified by title and/or category. I intend to review Thierry613's proposed deletions, as should anyone else interested. But so far I see careful deliberation and good work. See Wikiversity:Topic Review for a summary of the efforts. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 02:04, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Even though the statatistics topic page gets about one viewer per day, I think it is of good quality. It is an advanced physics page, and physics majors are far and few between. I "vote" that we keep that page, but will not fight to keep a page nobody reads.--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 02:40, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure which Topic:Statistics page you're referring to. The only one I found proposed for deletion is Topic:Statistics for science. I don't see much there worth saving. More importantly, the Statistics page is getting 9 views per day, so whatever it is we want related to Statistics should be introduced and linked from that page. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 03:07, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
I hope my proposals have not annoyed anyone. I followed Dave's advices in the Colloquium : Wikiversity:Colloquium#Topic_Review. As I explained, I began by the oldest "Last edit". So it has been quite easy until now. The big piece of the cake is the year is 2015. When I arrive at the years 2014-2015, I will probably need more attention from the community, in order not to delete important pages. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 13:20, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
I am not annoyed but instead grateful that you are cleaning up. The topic page in question is Topic:Statistical thermodynamics. It has lots of links, and I know that "links of links" are not particularly useful. Also, I am not doing much statistical thermodynamics these days and won't mind deleting it. But keep in mind that it is an advanced topic that is likely to attract only a few readers. So, what should we do?--18:53, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
The content of Topic:Statistical thermodynamics should be kept. Would it be better as a portal, or better merged with Statistical thermodynamics, perhaps as an overview and some subpages? The Statistical thermodynamics page gets 4 views per day, so my recommendation would be to merge them somehow, but it's not my area of expertise. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 19:11, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Could it be a good portal for a first move, letting time to find the best solution ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 20:03, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Modèle:Outdent I will merge them, keeping the page Statistical thermodynamics.--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 13:06, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Modèle:Done (I think I merged correctly)--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 18:16, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Curatorship[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

20 III 16

I have nominated you for Curatorship, based on your willingness expressed at [1]. We'll give the community a few days to consider the nomination. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:49, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your confidence, but I don't know if I'm experienced enough to handle curator tools. I contributed on the french-speaking wikiversity for a little more than a year, mostly in the music faculty (corresponding in fact to a school). I think I can handle with basic tools, but I ought to practise concerning the most complex ones ! Modèle:Smile.
Do I have to write somewhere an explicit application and present myself to the english-speaking community ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:14, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
PS. I'll write a request on Wikiversity:Curators. Dave, would you agree to be my mentor ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:20, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have included that. The request is already posted at Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship/Thierry613. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 14:28, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
No problems. Thanks ! --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:40, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

You are now a curator. Congratulations! You should see more options on the More menu at the top of the page and on Spécial:SpecialPages. Test new features to be sure you understand how they work. Some that are likely to be helpful are the ability to delete, merge history, move subpages, and move without redirect. Be careful with move subpages. Most of the time, it's a handy feature. But if you accidentally move something with many subpages, it can be difficult to put back correctly. Be sure to review Wikiversity:Deletions. When in doubt, it is better to tag for deletion and let someone else confirm. You can then delete resources others have tagged based on your own confirmation. Let me know whenever you have any questions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 22:20, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your confidence ! Be sure I will be carefull in the beginning (and even after). I will pratice the "new" functions in my sandboxes... --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 10:03, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

OK. I will take a look. I have realized that I also have created somme irrelevant categories those days. I will correct that. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:09, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Another point : when one merges a page's history, it doesn't merge the page's content, does it ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:10, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

No, merging history merges the history only. Content is behind the history links, but not merged into the current content. I often find it easier to merge the content first, then merge history, then restore the content (edit a history link and save). The main point behind merging history is to maintain the BY part of CC-BY-SA licensing. It ensures that anyone who edited the page receives credit for their contributions, and anyone wanting to research page history can do so. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 15:14, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

HIV/The electron of AIDS[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

31 III 16

Regarding the deletion of HIV/The electron of AIDS, the vandalism you noted is not from the original author. He continues to post an undelete request whenever the work is questioned. The vandalism is coming from others who wish to delete the work rather than refute it. I understand that the French Wikiversity handles this differently, but here we tend to allow fringe works, label them accordingly, and invite detractors to either use the talk page or create their own page refuting the legitimacy of the research. In other words, we want to engage people in academic discourse rather than censorship. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 12:47, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Sorry, I have been a little rough... maybe because "he" regularly came back on the French Wikiversity and that was frustrating. I fear discussion is useless and is a waste of time but I will take care next time. Modèle:Smile --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 12:53, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
See User_talk:Dave_Braunschweig#Atlantis for a similar issue. We can avoid the frustration by tagging it accordingly and encouraging others to discuss and refute the hypothesis. What we might consider, in addition, is your suggestion for a Research: namespace that would take these articles out of the normal wiki search. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:04, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
OK. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 13:13, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Wikiversity:Categories/2007/Week20[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

31 III 16

Regarding Wikiversity:Categories/2007/Week20, I would agree that the work is abandoned, but it also represents historical perspective and was created by an active custodian. We could tag this with Proposed Deletion or a deletion discussion, but it isn't something that should be speedy deleted. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 12:55, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

OK. Maybe I should rather use "Proposed deletion" for categories ?
I also left a message on your talk page about deletions. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 13:05, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
The empty categories you've been deleting are fine. They are supported by Wikiversity:Deletions that empty categories may be deleted. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:15, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Naming Conventions[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

31 III 16

The English Wikiversity does not have a standard casing requirement for article titles. Titles may be either title case or sentence case. See Wikiversity:Naming conventions#Casing. I find that academics prefer Title Case. Sentence case seems to be preferred by those already familiar with Wikipedia contributions. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 20:41, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Oh ! You did guess one of my questions ! I don't know which is the better. But I think it should be better to have a consensus about a choice. There is several categories which exist with the two cases at the same time... --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 21:09, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
The consensus is that either one is accepted. If both exist, one needs to redirect to the other. I personally prefer Title Case. I tried Sentence case and received negative feedback from colleagues. I've also seen Sentence case confuse students who are required to use Wikiversity for their assignments. It seems their teachers expect Title Case. But there are those who prefer sentence case because they are familiar with Wikipedia requirements. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 21:34, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
If you add a Modèle:Tlx to one of the categories, I can have the bot loop through and change anything in that category to the redirected category. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 21:48, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Topic Subpages[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

02 IV 16

I've discovered that some of the topic pages that had subpages were moved incorrectly. The top-level page was moved without the supporting subpages. We need to check Wikiversity:Topic Review and sort by subpages, then by status. Then check any of the redirect entries with subpages and confirm that the subpages were moved. If they weren't, the easiest approach is to move the top-level page back, then move the top-level page and subpages over to Portal:. I've done a few, but there are more to be checked. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 01:15, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Wikiversity:Topic Review is now updated so that only real subpages, not redirects, are listed in the subpages count. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 02:12, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Ouch ! I've donne bad things. I will carefully process the new list in order to correct that. For information, does the list of concerned topics begin by Topic:Aerospace engineering ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 11:04, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
We should address the redirects first, because they are now missing their subpages. I did a sort by Subpages and then by Status and was working my way from the greatest number of subpages down. I won't be able to work on it until perhaps much later today, so whatever you can do to make corrections would be appreciated. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:28, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Great ! I began from the lowest number of subpages up. You can see what I'm processing on : User:Thierry613/sandbox 4. For Subpages = 1 to 2, I have processed the subpages. For Subpages > 2, I have reversed the moving and let a tag '{move|...}}. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 13:35, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Changing capitalization is causing problems. See Spécial:PrefixIndex/Portal:Intellectual_property_law and Spécial:PrefixIndex/Portal:Intellectual_Property_Law as examples. We need consistency in the moves. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 13:43, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Modèle:Done. Capitalisation is an annoying problem. I will be carefull about it. Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:22, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

You might want to double-check pages that have been deleted. See Portal:Euclidean geometry/Chapter 3 and Portal:Euclidean geometry/Chapter 4 for examples. You can double-check your deletion log at Spécial:Log/Thierry613. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 15:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

What do you mean by double-check ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 15:58, 2 April 2016 (UTC
When I wrote that, I was thinking you could review and resolve the problem. I realized later that you don't have undelete rights. You need to tag any lost content for undeletion so that one of the custodians can recover it. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:18, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
OK. If you prefer, instead of deleting, I can rather tag with "Proposed deletion" in order to avoid any additionnal work. I feel I am not yet familiar enough with curator tools to be effective... --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 09:15, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
The deletes I've observed all seem to be valid. The issue came up on move with delete, where two pages of Euclidean geometry were deleted in the move. One had content, and one was a redirect to existing content. Just be careful in your moves that you aren't deleting existing content. Those should be merged instead. You can tag them with Modèle:Tlx. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 14:05, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
OK. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 22:42, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Ardunio Robot[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

02 IV 16

I don't know how to repair the title of the page Ardunio Robot and repair links to it, and wondered if that falls within your province? If not, I'm thinking someone else will see this and do it.--Alkhowarizmi (discusscontribs) 22:45, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Modèle:Reply to You can make this correction yourself. At the top of the page is a More menu. On that menu is a Move item. Use Move to rename pages. See Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Moving a page for more information. If you would prefer not to move it, add Modèle:Tlx to the page instead and it will appear under Category:Wikiversity maintenance. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 00:21, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks ... does Move also update links to the page? they're all in User space and I'm not sure about changing stuff on others' Users page (as an ordinary user myself).Alkhowarizmi (discusscontribs) 02:32, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
Move leaves a redirect behind so that no additional changes are necessary. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 02:42, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
OK, done. With hindsight I already knew that from the time when I moved my sandpit2, and left the mess for you to clean up as I didn't know how to delete the resulting redirect. --Alkhowarizmi (discusscontribs) 04:22, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

15 IV 16

I noticed you deleted the then had to create a new one because I forgot to transfer a botany image into it. What we often do here is one Curator/Custodian puts a resource up for deletion then another checks things out and deletes or does not delete. This might help. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 12:30, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

OK. I'm sorry. The deletion was a mistake and I tried to correct it, on the wrong way however. I'll be carefull for the next times. Thanks. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 12:35, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

7 Groups of Anti-Gravity Flying Devices[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Hi!

Just FYI: I noticed you added Category:Gravity, then removed it and added Category:Science fiction. While I'm not familiar with most of the last names included in this resource, I am familiar with Dr. Robert L. Forward. Here's one of his references: "Robert L. Forward, "Guidelines to Antigravity," American Journal of Physics 31 (3) 166-170 (1963)." retrieved by Google Scholar. The American Journal of Physics does not publish science fiction. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 23:47, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Oups ! Sorry ! Sometimes I'm really too fast. Don't hesitate to correct my mistakes. And thanks for you remark. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 12:12, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
Do you agree with Category:Gravitation ? --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 12:18, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
Seems okay! If you're interested, check out some of the other last names on Google Scholar with one of the key words like "anti-gravity". --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 23:33, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
I looked at Google Scholar. Anti-gravity is no more a SF theme at all. Modèle:Smile --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 10:10, 17 April 2016 (UTC)

The invisible DNA[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

An article with a six-year / 40-edit history can't be deleted for vandalism. It can be moved to user space, made a subpage, tagged for proposed deletion, or tagged for deletion discussion, but it isn't vandalism and can't be deleted outright. You also shouldn't delete anything that might be interpreted as a conflict of interest. You've already expressed concern regarding this editor, so just tagging for deletion and letting someone else address it would be a better approach. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 20:26, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

OK. Sorry. I thought it could be considered as vandalism as it has already been deleted some years ago (June 2010, https://en.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=The+invisible+DNA)... --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 20:30, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
I saw that but I am having difficulty following the history. The page doesn't show up in the new page log. Was the page recreated today or simply updated today? --
I don't know at all. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 21:50, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
I just tried a test. Deleting a page removes the N! entry from Recent changes and removes the page from the New Pages log. Undeleting that page does not restore it to the new log. Based on dates and times, I suspect that the page was recreated today, and when you deleted it, all record of it being created today was lost, making it appear to be a change rather than a new page. I'll update the RFD. Sorry for the confusion. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 23:05, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
You should not (be sorry). First of all, I did not have to delete the page as roughly as I did. Modèle:Smile --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 07:29, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Table of Contents on the right & other stuffs[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

I've been studying your suggested changes of putting Modèle:Tlx to reduce excess space and allow the text to flow more cleanly for the readers. The pages without images at the top seem okay so far. But, those with images turn out looking much better by putting Modèle:Tlx just after the image for the page. As an example, take a look at Astronomy/Balloons. Removing the Modèle:Tlx after the first section does allow the TOC to extend down into the next few sections nicely while eliminating large open spaces to keep the text vertical on the left and reading more easily. What do you think?

You're so right ! It is much better with the TOC after the image ; I will try to remember. But if there are pages where the TOC on the right does not fit at all, please don't hesitate to remove it.

Also, an earlier contributor suggested having templates such as Modèle:Tlx and Modèle:Tlx down at the bottom so they would not interrupt the flow of the introductory text. I like this contributor's suggestion. What are your reasons for moving these back to the top right as in Languages?

It seemed to me that the lector would be interested to know immediately what sort of page he is going to read. But if you are annoyed with that or if it causes flow problems, I will stop to move these templates.

BTW I also appreciate your efforts to try to deal with our multiple language categories. Wikipedia (which we are not missioned to be or be like) usually uses the single form of a word, e.g., language which differentiates it from say art. I like using the plurals such as languages because it differentiates us from Wikipedia. Also, language or languages have their roots in concepts like phonemes, grammemes, lexemes, and morphemes, among others. Is there a more fundamental concept than say languages that could serve as a root category?

Well, it is a big question. As far as I know, in english, the plural is preferred for keywords or category names. As a french native, I have not the habit of this usage but I can handle with. In most classification, "Language" or "Languages" or "Linguistics & Languages", etc. is a root category for all stuffs of that kind. But the actuel state of categories let me discouraged most of the time. It is like a big plate of spaghettis, as I can guess that, since several years, a lot of persons have donne their own cooking each in their corner. And it will be a big deal to put all in order...

In Languages I noticed you removed Modèle:Tlx, Modèle:Tlx, Modèle:Tlx, Modèle:Tlx, Modèle:Tlx, Modèle:Tlx, and Modèle:Tlx. As I recall these are subject templates. While I have no preference one way or the other for using or not using these, when I started here they seemed to be in popular use. What are your opinions for removing them now? --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 23:52, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

There is several points (which of course can be discussed) :
  • These templates automatically add the page to all the concerned categories. I suppose it was the initial goal. But IMHO, it adds confusion in the hierarchical category tree.
  • While all these subjects (languages, anthropology, etc.), as human activities, are obviously bound together, I don't think it is relevant to bind their corresponding categories.
I hope I have answered to your questions. Or at least begun to answer...
The last point (and the global logic of the categories tree) is a very important point and maybe it would be usefull and more efficient to ask @ and the entire community their opinions and wishes. I don't want to impose my own way and process. It could be very useful for my when I process and clean categories. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 13:31, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
I've been thinking about it. The top category is Category:Categories. Some of these like Category:Years might be better under Category:History for example. It's worth a try to place a plan on the Colloquium to see who responds with what suggestions. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 13:54, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
OK for me. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 14:18, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Music compositions[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

I have created a resource entitled Compositions that is designed to describe various kinds of compositions from a simple, general theory expressed by definitions of the word composition. One of the sections is about music composition (not how to compose music, but those constituents or elements which compose it). Please have a look and feel free to comment, criticize, suggest, or list components. We've been discussing this resource on its Discuss page. --Marshallsumter (discusscontribs) 01:50, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Yes; I will take a look at it ! --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 09:12, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Problème catégories non vides : C'est normal ?[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Salut, j'ai vu que tu avais renommé les deux premières Special:WantedCategories, puis supprimé le nouvel emplacement car vide... Alors que tout est sur l'ancien :

JackPotte (discusscontribs) 09:03, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

Il y aurait celle-là aussi stp : Category:All pages needing to be wikified. JackPotte (discusscontribs) 20:31, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
JackPotte (discusscontribs) 22:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
C'est bien possible... --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 17:47, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Motivation and emotion/Book[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Hi Thierry613, I'm working through fixing up a bunch of changes I think you made in April to this project. May be a good idea to check-in before making such a large number of changes. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 11:13, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

I'm finding category changes within this project too - Survey research and design in psychology. Please discuss before going ahead with recategorisation. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 11:35, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the mistakes. Normally, I have finished with categories cleaning. I have now a lot of familial problems which don't let me so much time for working on Wikiversity. I hope I will have more time soon. Thanks. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 16:48, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Maintenance[modifier | modifier le wikicode]

Something else you might be interested in. There are pages in the Wikiversity: namespace that aren't about Wikiversity. Would you be willing to look through them whenever you have time and tag them for move, delete, prod, etc.? They can be found using Special:PrefixIndex/Wikiversity:. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 21:12, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

OK. --Thierry613 (discusscontribs) 20:16, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
